I use a similar pump (different manufacturer, features and specifications) for a recirculating draft line cleaning setup. Note that fittings sizes are different on this pump vs the one I use in that build. The Icemaster is designed to cool fermentations in small vessels. It can be used with any vessel that has a glycol jacket or submersed cooling coil/rod. For each vessel you want to cool you will need to buy one of our Glycol Pump Kits. Each tank is able to be separately temperature controlled. Each Glycol Pump Kit includes a submersible pump that is placed in the cool bath of this chiller along with a digital controller. The digital controller includes a thermal probe that should be inserted into a thermal well in your vessel or can be taped to the outside of the vessel if you don’t have a thermal well. The digital controller then measures the temperature of your tank and turns the submersible pump on or off to cool to your desired set temperature. Up to four tanks can be controlled separately with one Icemaster and four Glycol Pump Kits (GLY355).

Compatability
The Icemaster can be used with any fermenter that has a built in cooling jacket or a submersed cooling coil. It works well as the cooling source for the following sytems and fermenters.

Ss Brewtech Fermenters and Brites with optional FTS Temperature Control Systems: Because FTS systems include a pump and controller you will not need to buy a separate Glycol Pump Kit.
Spike Conical with Optional Cooling Package – Because the optional Spike cooling system includes a pump and controller you will not need to buy a separate Glycol Pump Kit.
Speidel Tanks with Optional Cooling Jackets – You will need one Glycol Pump Kit for each tank.
Grainfather Fermenters – Grainfather fermenters have standard cooling jackets. You will need one Glycol Pump Kit for eash fermenter
Blichmann Fermenators with Optional Cooling Coil – You will need one Glycol Pump Kit for each Fermenator.

It is always difficult to determine exactly how many tanks can be chilled at one time as it depends on what is happening in each tank, if the tank is insulated, and what the ambient temperature is. Cold crashing always requires the most energy and requires tank insulation. We have experimented with capacities and can provide this general guide based on a 75 degree ambient and neoprene insulation. Neoprene does not provide much in the way insulation so you would obtain better results using Armaflex or a higher R rating insulation. If only controlling fermentation temps the capacity would be higher. Four Glycol Pump Kits (GLY355) is the maximum that will fit in the Icemaster. We are working on smaller glycol pump kits, where the pumps have smaller footprints, so the Icemaster right now has the capacity to use 5 pumps through the bulkhead fittings.

Cold Crashing capacity at 75F with neoprene insulation (double for fermentation temperature control):

2 – 1BBL (31 Gallon) Tank with neo
3 to 4 – 1/2BBL (15-20 Gallon) Tanks
4+ – 10-14 Gallon Tanks

The therminator has male garden hose fittings for the water in and out. If you are attaching a regular garden hose to it, you will need a female to female adapter.

The Plate Chiller Backflush Adapter makes it easy to attach a garden hose to the NPT threads of the heat exchanger to simplify washing. It can either be looped to pump hot cleaning solution (such as PBW) using a pump, or it can be attached to a faucet using a kitchen sink-to-garden hose adapter to push hot water through in the opposite direction of the normal wort flow.

Also recommended are the Blichmann QuickConnect fittings. These allow you to easily attach either 3/8″ or 1/2″ tubing to the wort side of the chiller. With these fittings, everything that touches the wort is either stainless steel or silicone. They install without tools, are easy to disassemble, and sanitizing is easy. You need one fitting for the wort in, and one for wort out. See below to add.

The best deal we have ever found in a highly efficient counterflow chiller! This 25′ pure copper pipe unit features 3/8″ hose barbs for wort and quick disconnect hose fittings for cooling water. It is an extremely efficient chiller, capable of chilling 5 gallon batches in one pass, as long as your cooling water is 60° F. or less. Easier to clean than a plate chiller, and much more efficient than an immersion chiller. This can be pump or gravity fed.

For the water inlet and outlet, you can purchase our optional Cooling Connection Kit item Q74 or use common garden hoses with Melnor quick disconnect fittings. For the wort inlet and outlet, the chiller has 3/8″ outer diameter hose barbs, use 3/8″ silicone tubing like our item J46 (not included). As this is a counterflow chiller, be sure to connect the cooling water inlet to the same end as the cooled wort outlet. 9¾” diameter, 10” tall.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The outer cooling jacket is not designed to withstand high pressure, so do not connect this to your house water pressure without the outlet of the chiller being open.

“304 stainless steel has good general corrosion resistance to a range of organic and in-organic fluids. It will have poor resistance to sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Crevice corrosion may also occur when chlorides (salts) are present in the fluid. Since chlorides are in all natural sources of water it is best to use distilled water whenever possible. Typically, a unit will last about 10-15 years with regular Tap water depending on salt content. With water containing chlorides or salt water, the life expectancy of the heat exchanger is reduced to about 3-5 years of continuous use, depending on the quality of the water. It is best to clean the units by back flushing with fresh water If highly contaminated fluids are used.”
