Normally on smaller submersible utility pumps, I would suggest that potential applications are part of a draft line cleaning setup, or as part of a recirculating chiller setup.

At 9,000 GPH this is probably way too powerful for a draft line cleaning setup. Recirculating chiller setup?  Maybe. Another potential application would be as part of a keg and carboy cleaning build.

This beefy counterflow heat exchanger is made from fully passivated 304 stainless steel with 1/2″ BSP male thread connections. Plate chillers are great for their high efficiency and compact size, but if there’s too much hop matter in the wort running through them they can quickly clog up. Transferring wort from your kettle to your fermenter is one of the critical steps in the brewing process where you don’t want any hiccups. Kegland Stainless Counterflow Chiller

In the past, I did some trials on the different types of wort chillers, and ended up with a counterflow chiller as the best solution for me. Of course, it depends on what you are prioritizing as a feature. Plate chillers are the fastest, but after I had a clogging incident, I had no confidence I could ever get it 100% clean again. Immersion chillers (even fancy ones) were slower, but most notably, they required me to continually bob them up and down in order to really be effective. The counterflow chiller is fast, and the relatively large passageways mean you don’t have to worry about debris clogging them up.

Here’s how a Counter Flow Chiller (CFC) works. You wort flows inside a smaller diameter tube, which sits inside a larger diameter tube that’s filled with your cooling water. Heat gets drawn out of the wort through the conductive walls of the inner tube (made of heat-conductive metal like copper or stainless steel). To keep the package size compact, these very long lengths of tubing get coiled up on top of each other like a snake. And there are 4 connections- wort in, wort out, cooling water in, cooling water out.

OPERATE
Neither clog up the entrance of the pump nor suck any dirty liquids.
Should the pump be used on a dirty surface, lift it a bit so that a contact with debris is avoided.
To lower the flood of water, use the control lever located on the side of the pump.
Immerse the pump into the water before connecting it to the plug.
At the very beginning, the pump may not work out properly as it might have some air inside,
So just take it off the water and immerse it again: it will surely work out.

PRECAUTIONS
Always disconnect the plug before handling the pump.
Do not use it without water.
Do not grab it using its cable.
Use only cold water.
Use the pump only if completely immersed.

UPKEEP
Remove the frontal part of the pump and the fan and wash them under flowing water.
Do not remove the drum of the pump.
Remove the frontal part and check that the fan runs the proper way.
Check the pump monthly and make sure the pump and its exit are free of obstruction.

At the very beginning, the pump may not work out properly as it might have some air inside,
So just take it off the water and immerse it again: it will surely work out.

PRECAUTIONS
Always disconnect the plug before handling the pump.
Do not use it without water.
Do not grab it using its cable.
Use only cold water.
Use the pump only if completely immersed.

UPKEEP
Remove the frontal part of the pump and the fan and wash them under flowing water.
Do not remove the drum of the pump.
Remove the frontal part and check that the fan runs the proper way.
Check the pump monthly and make sure the pump and its exit are free of obstruction.

 

Potential Uses:

  • I use a similar pump (different manufacturer, features and specifications) for a recirculating draft line cleaning setup.  Note that fittings sizes are different on this pump vs the one I use in that build.  Adjust accordingly
  • As part of a recirculating wort chiller setup (on the chilled water side).

This looks very similar to the pump featured in Sourcing a Replacement Pump for Mark’s Keg and Carboy Washer – the only thing I’m seeing that’s different is a 3 prong cord vs 2 prong
