Hands on Review – Update International Stainless Steel Portion Cups for Brew Day
These are generally intended for serving condiments and small amounts of food. Considering their size, materials and efficient design, they are also well suited for use on brew day. I’ve kept these and similar portion cups in my Brew Day Box for years.

You can use these to portion out hop additions and other boil additions and for pH and gravity sample containers. These are a great size and don’t take a lot of room since they nest together.

The stated capacity on these cups is 2 1/2 ounces. I used my Fast Weigh MS-500-BLK Gram Scale – to weigh the container and subtract that weight using the tare feature. Then I filled the container to the brim with water. The weight of that water came out to 60.3 grams. That translates to 2.039 ounces. That may vary slightly from cup to cup.
I was able to portion out 42.9 grams of hops in one of these cups. That figures to 1.51 ounces. Capacity will vary.

I’ve been using these cups since July of 2013. That’s nearly 7 years from the time of this update. These are one of those small, inexpensive upgrades that are a big help. I can confidently recommend them to you for use on brew day.

Is it possible that by “The stated capacity on these cups is 2 1/2 ounces” they mean fluid ounces as a measure of volume, not mass?
Although I measured the mass of that water, I did convert it to fluid ounces. 1 gram of water equals 1 milliliter (and 1 CC actually). There are 29.5735 milliliters in one once. So… 60.3 grams equals around 2.039 fluid ounces.
I bought the 12-pack from Amazon for ~$6 that was posted a week or two ago. Same 2.5 oz listed size.
Used them this last weekend. Good quality, but I had to split 1.33 oz of hops into two cups when pouring from a wide-mouth mason jar.
Maybe I could have piled them up nice and high, but for all intents and purposes, I couldn’t pour them in that way and I’m not going to dig my hands through a jar of hops to do it manually.
Hmmm… maybe it depends on how chunky your pellet hops are? It was pretty easy for me to get the 1.5 ounces in.
