  • Healthy pH value of drinking water: A pH value of 7 means a substance is neutral. The lower value indicates acidity, and a higher value is a sign of alkalinity. To better understand the range in pH, take a look at these examples: apple juice 3, orange juice 3.5, coffee 5.5, milk 6.2, baking soda 8.5, soapy water 10, bleach 12.
  • Which kind of water to choose: Consuming excessively acidic or alkaline water is unhealthy, warns the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Drinking water must have a pH value of 6.5-8.5 to fall within EPA standards.
  • Function of TDS meter: NSF International stated a TDS meter is not necessary. However, it can certify whether there are some excessive contaminants like heavy metals.
  • Very important tips: the water may be corrosive if the TDS level is very low. The corrosive waters may leak the toxic metals from the household plumbing. So, the initial recommendation would be to get your water tested and determine the general quality and chemistry of your water. Do this before consuming or installing your water treatment system.

Use the pH meter to check the pH of your water, mash, [test Star San effectiveness] and finished beer.  The TDS meter could come in handy for checking your RO filter [See: Review – Portable Reverse Osmosis Water System] or for checking purchased distilled or RO water.  Some water processors add minerals back for flavor.  A TDS meter will allow you to make sure you’re getting what you want.
