For me, getting a refractometer was one of those upgrades that made a lot of difference. With a refractometer you need a sample size of two drops. I figured that this would pay for itself in beer savings alone. I also had just broken my hydrometer and came to the realization that hydrometers are made of breakable glass that can break! 🙂

This is named calibration solution, but in homebrewing terms, I think it’s better thought of as a “double check you refractometer” solution. Calibration solution for SG and Brix refractometers… water. Distilled or RO water. This particular solution offers you a known gravity liquid (1.026 sg) that you can use to double check your equipment.

I bought this and for my sugar refractometer it was so far off as to be utterly useless. When I adjusted the refractometer to the 1.026 the label claims, and then used RO water, the plain water showed about 0.01 SG. I made up 0, 10, 20 and 30 P solutions with distilled water and recalibrated the device and it still showed the 35ppt as being completely wrong. It may work swimmingly for salt in aquaria, but I found it useless for sugar solutions.
Hey Peter, Have you tried calibrating with distilled or RO water and then doing a test reading of the 35ppt solution?
